Chhatbir Zoo Chandigarh

Also known as the Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park, Chhatbir zoo, the distinguished zoological garden is  located at a distance of 17 km from Chandigarh and 55 km from Patiala. The  zoo sprawls across an expanse of 202 acres against a stunning green backdrop.

It is indeed a marvel to see how acres of raw scrubland have been transformed into a wonderful home for wild animals. The zoo paints a magnificent picture of the underlying ecological harmony that enhances the charm of the beautiful surroundings. The animals are kept in open enclosures so that their behavioral and physical needs can be met akin to their natural habitat | Chhatbir zoo photos

The main attraction of the Chhatbir zoo Chandigarh is the Royal Bengal Tiger, which has developed into the perfect point of interest for visiting the zoo. Visitors are taken in a caged motor vehicle to the tiger’s refuge to savor its attractions. While traveling inside the tiger’s refuge, the visitors can enjoy close ups of this magnificent animal.

The Chandigarh zoo’s prized possessions are its eighty species of rare animals and variegated birds, dappled in a multitude of colors as well as fish and reptiles. The Chhatbir zoo Chandigarh officials go great lengths to keep the animals in an enclosure that closely resembles their natural habitat. The animals reside in large moats, surrounded by greenery and present an island like ambience | Chhatbir zoo photos

The Chhatbir Zoo is the perfect place for picnic as it also has a water body and large wooded parks and jungle area. Children come here for a fun-filled day and also learn a lot about the different animals by carrying out research on them. During the winters the rush increases due to pleasant climate during the daytime. Many zoologists also visit the Chandigarh zoo for carrying out research on various species of life.

The Chhatbir zoo has about 950 animals and birds belonging to about 85 species housed in about 100 enclosures (animal houses). Most of the zoo animals are either from other zoos or are born here | Chhatbir zoo photos

It was nice to see that the location of Chattbir Zoo and other valuable information about the nearby places are very briefly described. Hope u will try to upgrade the information every week or month. One of my suggestion is that u can try to display the news of the animals, their diet, habits, likes or dislikes etc. on the website. It will be more intersting.

Since I am regular visitor to this beautiful zoo would like to state that the caged vehicle ( like jurrasic park ) is taken in the zoo premises to see the lions and not the tigers
It is a great sight to watch so many lions in the open so close to you …a sight probably not available in any other zoo in India and the deer safari is also worth watching where you can take your vehicle at no additional cost ( after paying Rs 250 once )
Best time to visit is in winters when all the animals come out in the open and give u a good view
The zoo staff is very friendly and have maintained the zoo very well
A must see zoo for all animal lovers and wildlife enthusiasts

today visited the zoo,but i was disappointed to see the arrangements for the animals i think govt.should give more funds for the zoo animals and also increase the animals, though snacks inside the zoo are of good quality and economical ,LION SAFARI earlier use to be a g8 charm but the standards has gone down, animals are looking sick and weak……..lot of work has to be done to uplift it to the standards

Chatt bir zoo is a hell for animals . There are nearly 20 liones in safari 6 or 7 years ago but now only one or two sick and old liones same is the case with tigers , last year when I visited zoo I saw a healthy white tiger but then after eight months when I saw him he looks. Very unhealthy and underweight . Lots of animals were dead in unusual circumstances . . There is corruption in every corner of India so how do you expect that these animals are save from it .

it is a wonderfull place for students. as like a live show of discovery channal.there are lepord tigers etc.but theere is some thing wrong with that man whome i saw on 9th june 2012 at 10A.M. on ticket window. his behaviour is so rude and disgusting with tourists as like a tiger wwho have many horns and long teeth. but in the zoo all was well.

  • Seema katoch

Today me & my family went to zoo first of all no private cars are allowed inside the zoo. One can hire feris inside the zoo. It moves very very very fast. One can not enjoy as much in feris. And they will drop u mid-way. Otherwise zoo is very good place one can feel so close to nature ,very rare species of animals birds & reptiles. One must go in winters & by foot.or if permission is allowed then in u’r own car.

It was a vast experience for me to see animals in a single location. I visit there at many times with my family members.I saw some changes there in 4-5 years. before 4-5 years the location was so nice to see but now some beautiful things like flowers, originally green atmospher have destroyed there. No proper parking and well park is there

  • asha

plz open d zoo on monday too…

  • Baljit

Truly the zoo is also getting corruptionaize like the Human species. It’s under Punjab Govt. Before 6-7 years when I visited there, it was a beautiful place to visit with a great variety & quantity of animals. But now, evrything seems to be finished. No fun, no excitement. A fistfull of animals. Govt. must must spend more on it and the progress of the zoo.

  • Rahul......kajla

it was agood experience for me to see so many animals in a single location.

  • Prince Jindal

this is the wonderful and the fantastic place.INDIA should make these type of zoo.this is very knowledgeful to the children of school.

  • varnika

good experience to see beautiful animals but most of the animals were adopted by the school.

  • Ratna

Very Exciting views. Lots of animals were there. I wish to go there again in winter season with my Gehna Di and Ujjwal Bro.

  • Gehna

  • Sajid Ali

  • kavita rawat

naw i want to give him to the authority of chhatbir zoo as i knw that no other will take care of him more than u people…
cn u please help me out that.. whether you will adopt him or not…
as i dnt want to sell my pet
i only want to give him the natural environment..
my pet name is snowy “rabbit”. its of 2-3 months old..

  • Sidhartha Kumar Dash

Its really a great experience to visit the zoo. Very much natural environment with a beautiful site to plan the sunday. Not only children, but parents are also enjoying the every moment inside the zoo. Only negative thing is there is a charge of Rs 60/- for taking camera inside the zoo. Rate is high and should be reconsidered.

  • huma

the zoo authority needs to show a high degree of sensitivity towards the elderly and differently abled people and therefore allow private vehicles inside the zoo

  • amardeep

During Summer, closing time of zoo should be alteast 6:30…

  • Sanju

It would be nice if we are allowed our vehicles inside on week days. Lets say on one or two week days the private vehicles are allowed so that we can take are elder family members in there. That would be nice.

  • Abu Jaan

WHy are some people cribbling about private vehicles going inside the zoo? Pay 250 Rupees and take your vehicle and oldies inside.WHats the big deal? The big deal is people want everything for free. They dont understand that maintaining all animals inside the zoo costs money. They want facility at no cost.

  • VIKAS

The department of zological park is very lazy and they are not update their website properly. Their Contact no is temporary disable at this time.

  • Jagjit Singh

    Its nice place for children.
But Need to increase place for parking, you can face damage to your vehicle
    because of bad arrangement.
